Who I Am as a Writer?

In today's world there are many types of writers. We have journalist, poets, storytellers, fictional and non-fictional writers. I feel that I am a fictional/non-fictional writer. Writing fictional stories can open a world of creativity. You can expand your imagination beyond limits. At the same time when you need to talk about something real and be serious you can go non-fictional. Me personally I love to be creative with my writing. I like to take the time out brainstorm and think of something that will wow my reader. I am not a poet by a longshot. Me and poetry do not get along. Poetry is difficult for me. When in 6th grade this is when I discovered who i am as a writer. As a class we were asked to write a book at least five pages long. I was unsure on what to write about. Thinking for days I finally came to descion. I decided to make up a story about a boy lost in this bizzare world. This was the discovery of me becoming a true ficional writer. Before this I did not know who I was as a writer. Some books encouraged me to become a fictional writer. Such book like the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe and arthur. Growing up I thought I wanted to be a journalist. Boy was I wrong! It was fun seening journalist travel around the world interviewing people. With that with that comes hard work which I failed to realize. You have to spell very well, do lots of research, things like that. Being a non-fictional writer gives you some options. I like to be a fictional writer when expressing a feeling of serious, love, and mad etc...Like I said earlier 6th grade is the discovery of me finding out who i am as a writer. Poetry is boring to me. Not that I cant understand it but it do not interest me.

  1. Tyree,

I'm excited to see your portfolio proposal on Monday. I suspect it will include a focus on fiction. I like that you write to "express a feeling." This is a really sophisticated way to think about writing. Artists often try to express something abstract with a concrete product - this kind of thinking connects you with all kinds of artists, from poets to painters, sculptors to musicians.

I hope you will challenge yourself to try writing non-fiction, as well. You may find that a new type of writing, or the revision process, will allow you to express an idea that you might not have thought possible in expository writing. For example, on Change.org, you can find petitions written by everyday people (and lots of organizations) that show how much they care about and believe in things like freedom of speech, protection of animals and women's rights. Check it out!

Great first post - I'm looking forward to hearing more from you.

  3. Hi Tyree!

My name is Trena and Ms. Rae has invited me to mentor you through your journey this summer as a writer! A little bit about me: I studied architecture at Virginia Tech and now I travel all over the world, working as an architect for the Navy. I love expressing myself artistically, especially through architecture and photography.

When I was younger, I was really artistic and I LOVED to write fictional short stories- especially stories where I could make up my own crazy settings and characters- AND draw pictures of those crazy settings and characters! I guess you could say that writing was the beginning of my creative ‘bug’ :o) I think it’s great that you like to write fictional stories too! As you said, they are definitely a good way to express how you’re feeling about the world around you!

Ms. Rae has suggested that I review your posts at least once a week. If you like, I can write back more often; you can also ask me questions or get advice anytime!

I look forward to reading your work this summer!

    trena.
